What are the Side Effects of Taking Actos®?

Actos® (Pioglitazone) is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar or glucose levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes. This drug was originally manufactured and sold by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. It was approved for widespread usage by the FDA in July of 1999.

Some of the more common side effects of taking Actos® are headache, sinus infection, and upper respiratory infection. Users have also reported problems with breathing, rapid weight gain, low blood sugar and changes in their vision.

Women who have not had monthly menstrual cycles for long periods of time due to a medical condition have reported the sudden start-up of menstrual cycles due to taking Actos®. For this reason, doctors recommend resuming birth control prevention in order to avoid pregnancy. In studies, women have been shown to be more prone to bone fractures in the hand, foot, and upper arm while taking the drug, Actos®.

Long-term studies have found that taking Actos® over a period of time or in a higher dose may increase your risk for bladder cancer and heart attack. The United States Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning concerning Actos® based on their review of results from an ongoing study. A study conducted in France has suggested links between long-term usage of Actos® and bladder cancer or heart disease. Based on these results, France has suspended use of this drug. Drug regulators in several other European countries have made these same recommendations.

In spite of these warnings, Actos® remains available in the United States by prescription. The FDA has recommended that healthcare professionals avoid prescribing the drug to those who already have bladder cancer or heart disease.

The lawyers at Zinda & Davis PLLC are currently pursuing lawsuits in behalf of former Actos® users who have been diagnosed with bladder cancer. In question is whether or not the manufacturer conducted adequate research and whether they failed in their duty to design, inspect and label this product correctly.
