Actos Bladder Cancer Lawsuit

Facts about Actos® and Bladder Cancer

Actos® (Pioglitazone) was originally created by Takeda Pharmaceuticals as a treatment for Type 2 Diabetes. This drug was approved by the FDA for widespread usage in July of 1999. Actos® belongs to the same class of drugs as Avandia (Rosiglitazone).

Recently, users of the drug Actos® have reported serious side effects. These illnesses include bladder cancer, an increased risk of heart attack, and other health issues. It was eventually discovered that these problems were due to a lack of adequate research performed by the drug manufacturer.

As a consequence, a lawsuit was initiated in order to compensate those affected. European, German, and French health officials have recalled the drug and have suspended its sale. In June of 2011, the FDA issued strong new warnings about the dangers of developing bladder cancer for those taking Actos®.

Recent clinical research indicates that Actos® may be safer than Avandia®. However, pharmaceutical studies have shown that the longer the medication is taken, the higher the risk of developing serious illnesses such as heart disease and bladder cancer.

A ten-year research study conducted by Takeda Pharmaceuticals indicated that those who took Actos® for a period of a year or more were subject to an increased risk of developing bladder cancer. In September 2010, the FDA announced the findings and called for further review and a reevaluation of the drug Actos®.

How Does This Affect You?

If you have been diagnosed with bladder cancer, then you may be entitled to compensation. Additionally, those who have suffered a heart attack or damage to their heart while taking the drug, Actos® may also be eligible to receive compensation.

It is widely known that heart attacks increase your vulnerability to further cardiovascular health problems. Some of these include congestive heart failure, a condition that makes it difficult for the heart muscle to pump sufficient blood to other parts of the body. Because of this, those who have suffered damage to the heart from taking Actos® may develop symptoms like swelling of the legs, hands and feet, as well as shortness of breath. This group may also be entitled to compensation.

In May of 2011, FDA researchers concluded that those using Actos® had a disproportionate risk for developing bladder cancer as compared to other diabetes drugs. A study performed on over 193,000 patients and spanning a five-year period, demonstrated a greater risk of getting bladder cancer for patients who had been on Actos® for 12 months or more.

Public insurance data has also revealed an increased incidence of bladder cancer among Actos® users. A final study released in August of 2010 showed that both Avandia® and Actos® produced dangerous side effects, including a potential for cardiovascular damage.
